Angela Key

Angela is an artist based in South Africa. She was born in 1969: Born January 17th in Blantyre, Malawi. She moved to South Africa and in her early years shows great interest in art portraying the Cape's fauna and flora in oil pastels. In 1976, Angela wins the Santam Exhibition Youth Art Award. 86: Her father's career in marketing takes the family from Cape Town to Connecticut, Dallas and finally Johannesburg where Angela matriculates at Northcliff High School. Her father's passion for wildlife photography, and annual trips to game reserves instill in her a love for the bush.  Angela studies Fine Arts at Wits Technikon obtaining a distinction in sculpture. She leaves Johannesburg to join an advertising agency in Cape Town, where she first begins sketching birds in ink and watercolour. In 1993 she travels to Kenya, the United Kingdom, Turkey and Eastern Europe and in 1994 returns to South Africa. She  meets Hennie Niemann Jr. and is exposed to Vermont's illustrious art community. It is here that she is encouraged to pursue her detailed bird illustrations in pastel.  Angela sets up a permanent studio with Hennie in Vermont, from were she can draw inspiration from the rich and diverse birdlife of the area's mountains and coastal fynbos regions as well as from frequent field trips to the Kalahari, Eastern Transvaal, Namibia and other game reserves throughout Southern Africa.
